    3. I'll try chaning the update status as much as possible, but most of the time when I edit my chapters I try and edit a whole chapter and some of the next if I have time. So, at most I can make predictions about what day the next chapter will be out because I know when I have time to go through a chapter in the future.
This might change in the future though.
How much effort I put into this all depends on how many people show interest and read my book. It motivates me to spend more of my free time on this novel when I see that people enjoy reading it :)

    1. You don't say? Which font would you prefer?
I, personally, enjoy this font since it reminds me of an old typewriter, but if I get a better suggestion I would not be against changing it in the future.
Maybe I ccould put up a poll after I have a few fonts to choose from and then let the readers decide.

    2. Yes, Arial for example would be a good font to read on a screen.

      Delete
    3. Hm, Arial could definitely be used instead of Courier New. It would be good to know a more specific reason for why it is better though; so, please elaborate? I have no great attachment to any font, but it's always better to make a comparison if possible.
How about this? All who read this and care, give a suggestion about what font to use; and when a few has been suggested, I'll put those I could agree to use on a poll. Then we'll see what font will be used by voting.
If anyone gives a suggestion, please explain why the specific font you suggested is good, or why it is better than the currently used Courier New font.

    4. I agree that another font will make this MUCH MUCH easier to read. I just arrived at your website here —got here from someone who suggested it at another light novel, and I'm doubting whether I'll read this mostly because of the font. If I do read it, I'll copy and paste it into word, change the font, and read it off of that.
Here's a little article with some information about this.

    5. Thanks for the info. It's good to know :)
I'll change to Arial because that is the only font that has been suggested so far, but I still would like to know if there are other fonts that some might like better.
For now, however, it seems like it's best to change into Arial. I read some about fonts yesterday and decided to change it. It's always better to use a design others find easy to read, and Arial was one of those that many sites said was one of the best for web-pages.
I made this more interactive and topic related post also:

  6. I think you should rename it God's Dream. Kinda just fits it more in my opinion. Unless of course, Calyxia has something to do with it later on. In that case, just ignore that.
    Other than the name, I'm absolutely loving it. I can't wait for the next chapter. When I stumbled across this I thought it was already done. I usually don't read them until they are finished so I don't have to wait ;-;
Also I found a typo in Chapter 6 on the stat sheet. Not sure if the experience is meant to be 200 to the next level, however later you say that the first two levels were only 100 experience.
    It looks like
    Experience (next level): 195(5)
    Percentage: 5% remaining.
If the experience is supposed to be 200, the percentage should say 2.5, but since you later say that it was 100, the 1 shouldn't be there, and it should just be 95.

Once again, thanks for the amazing novel. I'm recommending it to all my friends. It's wonderful, and I'm waiting to see that sewer quest get done. Also kinda curious about that chick he traded the rabbit skins to. Can't wait to see the development.

    1. Calyxia is the name for the book-series, and is also a minuscule foreshadowing, hidden within a meaning, obscured by interpretation. If I say any more than that it would be a small spoiler. But I can say that the knowledge about the why I've used the word Calyxia will begin to unravel in the second Volume.
After saying this I also must explain that when I created this blog I had already written the first volume and plotted out the second volume completely, so there may be a deeper meaning to many things that seem obscure or nonsensical within both the story, the titles and maybe even in small snippets of information that can be found on this blog. Hopefully this isn't a big spoiler, I will remove this comment if I think it could become that.
God's Dream is the first Volume's name and also what the game is called, the second volume will have another name.
And the Experience is like this:
      Level 1 → Level 2 = 0→100 = 100 Experience,
      Level 2 → Level 3 = 100→200 = 100 Experience until next level.
And if MC has 195 Experience, he has 95 Experience out of 100 until the next level, making it 5% until next Level from the former Level. Maybe I was a bit vague? I have to read through it later and see if I can make it any clearer.
The number 195 is the total Experience he has gained since the game started, and the (next level) is how much he has until he gains another Level.
Thank you very much for the input and for telling me you like my novel. You recommending it to others is greatly appreciated too, since the better this blog does, the more I feel like writing, and that makes it possible for new chapters to be posted a bit quicker :)

    2. I see now. You should probably put (total experience) and (experience to next level) in there somewhere. Otherwise thanks for the response! And yeah, I'm hoping for more soon xD
I also don't see that as a spoiler, because I just wanted to know if Calyxia was relative or not. Thanks!

    3. It's good that I cleared things up. Thank you for showing me the minor flaw too, I changed some text earlier and added the word 'Next' where I think it might clear things up, but haven't had the time to go through all the chapters. I'll have to do that during the weekend.
And yeah, I always try not to give out spoilers, because I have a big problem with people doing that to me, it's almost at the level of an OCD. Which is why I might seem a bit overly concerned about not giving away spoilers x)
I'm glad you're looking forward to the next chapter :)

Meaning keep up the characters plausibility and their actions logical.

    1. Wow, that's a great compliment. I couldn't stop smiling for some time after reading that you think this story and LMS are on par, even if it's only so far. You made my day :D
But I'm a bit confused, could you elaborate on what doing a David Eddings is? I think I once read the first book in the Belgariad, but can't remember reading more of the series.
I do agree that there should be plausibility and rationality in a character's actions, at least most of the time. There are exceptions, however. What if I would, for example, write from the perspective of an insane character? Or if I would have a scene be one where the character becomes very emotional and more or less acts on instinct rather than thought? There are more cases, but those two are enough to get my point across.

      Delete
    2. Plausibility and rationality works fine even when characters are insane or emotionally tested. Meaning an insane person or a psychopat would still act in a certain way fitting to their own logic and character build-up or exact lack of the same :) i really like your flow and look forward to read more. My comments are mostly meant to advice not to forego proper storyline vs rushing cool action whcih we alle love. Of course i would neither want to read lotr details :)
David eddings are writing good stories but after reading one of his series more or less all the stories follow the same pattern. Gods, characters and sidechars are mainly doing theiractions to follow through a scripted plot. However they lack plausibility and reason. And sometimes it feels like. Im reading about mindless string dolls parading around.
I dont care about even the most op characters as long as they are possible and have more depth than a reallity tv show :)

    3. Dragonlance is a great example of how each char have theircown identity and act eith own motivations etc.

    4. Sorry for bad spelling, but writing from tablet is not going well. Also a bit more length to chapers would be great and feel more satisfactory to the reader :)

    5. Sorry for the late response, I haven't spent much time at the computer the last week because I got sick.

And thanks for the advice, I try and read all comments and any time I find some good advice I save it and think about it :)
Longer chapters might be a good idea, but it isn't the easiest thing to know where to cut a story without creating weird beginnings or endings of a chapter. I wrote the first book without even cutting it into chapters and then when I read through it for the first time I decided where the chapters would start.

I try and balance both the flow of words, actions of characters/scenes and the pace of chapters' interaction with each other. I've also spent quite some time on writing a character description and development plan for the more prominent characters so that they won't become contrary to their own inner workings.

  9. Awesome novel thought it was some cheap SAO ripoff of that already bad show or some lazy fantasy setup of using video games for easy setting writing. That trend is done to death. I got very much intrigued when you added much vivid detail into the skills and uses. Not to mention the MC doesn't seem like a pushover or a doormat until >Insert badass switch flip<

My question is what genres is this going to get into?
I'd be even more intrigued if you made Jays life much more better with some romance that doesn't turn into a romcom with boobgrabs. Then I'd really be impressed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you. I've tried my best to not have my story be just another fan fiction of some other game-related story. Especially since, like you say, that has been done to death.
I just had a few ideas I turned into a story inside a game-world for my own amusement at first; then I began writing out a plot-line which reached beyond my normally shorter improvised stories; and then I spent a couple of months collecting ideas which turned into world-building and creating characters for a longer story. And now, after having written the first book in the series, I felt it was good enough to actually be published, but didn't want to try and send it to a publishing house and get no answer for months or even years.

I guess you had that impression because of the synopsis? I wrote that quickly and the other two I've written since then felt too much like spoilers, so I've had little progress in writing a good synopsis for the story. Maybe I should try and have some interested and willing reader write a synopsis? Well... that's a thought for another day.

SAO had good ideas, too bad it felt extremely rushed and lost most of its potential because of large plot-jumps. If SAO had focused more on building a deeper story beyond and aside from the "romance", it would have been able to become at least ten volumes in just the Aincrad-arc.

All I can say about the MC is, well, he is a bit strange. He sometimes focuses so much on the tree that he can't see the forest, if you catch my meaning. And being a push-over until his switch flips? Probably not that either. Before entering the game he was a career soldier which gave him quite a few instincts that does not show themselves as meekness.

The genre, if I have to use one word would be Fantasy; which isn't saying much, but if I had to elaborate it could be spoiling for those who like to over-analyze things. It will encompass lots of other genres too in small and large portions of the story, but if I write all the genres the story could encompass the genre-text would be almost as long as this comment. What genre would you say this story is so far?

And romance... Right away, I can tell you that there won't be any boobgrabbing romcom from what I've planned so far, but even I don't know exactly what will happen in the distant future. However, I'll say this: I follow the line of thinking that romance—even if not used as the main plot-line—should still be important to both the story and the character's development or not be included at all, but it also shouldn't encroach upon the main plot-line and become too important. We'll see if I succeed in this balancing-act.

Phew... this became a long comment. I hope I answered some of your thoughts without being overly long-winded.

    2. Completely unrelated to what your saying (sorry) but have you got a work schedule set up? Or rather an update schedule? Because I'm keen to read more, and would like to know when to start looking for the next chapters. Is there a regular update system in place or not quite yet?

      Delete
    3. I think that the setting does not lend itself to the development of romance. Bear in mind that Jay (and the other 'champions') are the only ones online 24/7. For the rest of players, i would imagine that the online time would be much lower, as they have to sleep/work.

      Delete
    4. I had a schedule set up, then I sort of posted more chapter than I was supposed to because I had more readers than I imagined I would the first few weeks. I got a bit overly excited and wanted to give out more to read to those that were interested, but then I got sick and had a bit of a set-back in posting-frequency... and now I've thought it through and come to the conclusion that I need to build a buffer of a few chapters so that I can post them even if I can't edit or write a specific week.

      Delete
    5. Advance, you are right that the setting doesn't lend itself to the development of romance, and the story is primarily a sci-fi fantasy story, so we'll see what happens with any romance in the future.

    1. I will probably try that. I never thought I would get such a good response so early. I hoped, of course, but I seldom put any stock in hope, but now that I know lots of people enjoy reading my story I will most likely look into self-publishing.

      Delete
    2. That's the route I was thinking for myself since ebook self publishing allows you to always have your work on show without risking it disappearing for bad sales performance. Of course after finding out that Maruyama first wrote Overlord as a webnovel and seeing your work I believe it's wiser for me to go the same way, then I can polish my skill and try to self publish in ebook format.

      Delete
    3. Self-publishing an ebook is also a lot easier than doing anything else. Personally I just put this story up on this blog because I wanted to see what strangers thought of my writing... I've sent books into publishing houses without success and I always had to wait for a very long time before knowing anything about what I've written, which isn't very productive or fun. So, this way seems both more fun and more reliable in getting different feedback on what I've created.

If/when you have written something and put it up as a web-novel, give me a link, I'd like to check it out :)

      Delete
    4. You are absolutely right about digital self publishing, it appears you are way more experient in this than I am, anyway many people who never got a chance from traditional publishers made it big with Kindle, Nook and other such platforms. As for me, well when I get the time and motivation to work earnestly on my writing I'll definitely provide you the link and I was also thinking it would be nice to host a link for your blog, but let me not get to carried away as I can't pinpoint precise or specific dates but as long as you keep this alive I'll definitely do it when I set my gig up. I have had these exchanges with you because I was getting indecisive about writing (ideas are easy to come by with comparing to make them something real) and reading the work of someone who had the same motives in first hand is inspiring for me.

I'll be waiting for your next chapters and again I hope you find joy in all your work and may you make your dreams real!

      Delete
    5. Yeah, I've read about it some, it's always better to have more information.
If you don't have time and motivation to write, let me recommend a way to become motivated: create a character you want to write about and a world that you want to write things in and it will be easier to begin. Collect ideas and things related to your story and in time you can't help wanting to put it all together into a story.

I'm glad I can inspire you, and thank you for your support :)

But, that's for an eventual future; right now, it's only a thought.

I hope you're right and it's as you say: that most complainers just wanted chapters earlier. But even so, I won't take any complaints to heart if I can't find something productive in them; and if I can find something productive from a complaint it isn't really a complaint anymore but an opportunity for betterment. So, I don't mind reading negative things.

It's also fairly difficult to influence my state of mind. I'm called Ataraxia for a reason (the word Ataraxia means "a state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety; tranquillity") and that is pretty much my default mental state.

    1. Understandable. I was supposed to post chapter 9 and 10 with a longer span of time in between, but got sick and had to postpone chapter 9 slightly, so I chose to post both at the same time instead.
I chose to make chapters shorter because most web-novels I've read have about this length, and I think I've ended and started chapters at a good point in the story. I will most likely not make longer chapters for now, because I've already cut the story where I thought it was best, but maybe in the future. We'll see.

Are you used to reading epic fantasy or other books that have long chapters? It might just be that your perspective is accustomed to other genres that usually have longer chapters, but that's just my hypotheses.

      Thanks for the support :)

      Delete
    2. This is my first web-novel so I never knew it was usually this short. Yeah I'm a picky reader so I only read handful of books but all of them had chapters that would usually last 30 mins or more. Light novels are my favorite becuz the chapter will usually last me an hour. I just enjoy that feeling of time flying while I'm a good book. The web novel chapter feels like a tease when it ends lol. I would recommend maybe sending these stories to forums like 4chan and tumblr. I heard log horizon was started in 2chan. But anyways Thanks for the hard work!

      Delete
    3. 30 minutes per chapter might be a bit much, as is the 1 hour for a light novel chapter, but as Ataraxia said, Web Novels and other type of independent writing normally has a large chapter amount, with only a few thousand words per chapter. I've personally become accustomed to frequent small chapter length releases of Web Novel chapters, as do I enjoy the weekly longer chapters. Whichever one you do, i have no qualms with.

      Delete
    4. John Park, I might make longer chapters later, but in volume 1 I can't change the chapters' length because I've already made the appropriate cuts in the story from my point of view. And teasers should be part of a good story—or so I think at least. That feeling of wanting to read another chapter right after you're done with a chapter is both pleasurable and painful, and when you reread something like that it hooks you to the story in a great way. If you like fantasy and long chapters/books I'd like to recommend Brandon Sanderson's “The Stormlight Archive”.

      Delete
    5. Thanks for the support Chandler Kilroy :)
My thoughts are in this direction, I'd rather keep the chapters short and post them faster. In the future there's a high possibility that I'll post more than one chapter in a week. I just have to find the time to create a chapter-buffer for a few weeks and then I'll start posting more frequently. I made the mistake of being overly enthusiastic when I started this blog because I got lots of great feedback early. So, I posted more chapters than I maybe should have. Then I got sick and couldn't really sit at the computer.
But today I'll be spending the rest of the day on this project, so I'll probably finish most of chapter 12, but I'll post it next weekend no matter what because I don't want to make people wait longer than a week for a chapter even if I can't spend any time on a chapter a specific week.

Right now I've posted about 5-8% of the total story-line I've written, but I'm only on the early part of volume 2 (10-13% of story-line) when it comes to having the story in story-form. As long as I see people enjoying my writing I will keep posting; it's the greatest motivator I've had when it comes to writing and it makes me more willing to write.

(like one paragraph lol) I'm also gonna read through chapter 1 for some editorial purposes. (I usually don't write out the full idea.) And I'll try and upload it tomorrow.

    3. I didn't say I wouldn't give my opinion, I said it wouldn't be a very reliable opinion because it's always easier to form a meaningful opinion with more material.
I'm looking forward to it though.

Btw, what is your writing process? “Architectural” or “Free-flowing”? (Architectural meaning you plan out everything before writing the story in book-form, and Free-flowing meaning you write the book-form directly and then change it if needed)

    4. I'm a free-flowing writer. I write whatever comes to my mind, and then I sleep on it. I reread the chapter the next day, change things, improve things, then write more. And I repeat the process.
Although I can't say I write every day. I used to. Now I just write whenever I'm inspired to.
However, my writing style varies. For example, for this web novel, I started out architecturally, then swapped to free-flowing after the beginning was down. I do that a lot too. And other times I purely write in architectural style.

I guess it depends on what it is I am writing.

    5. So I uploaded the chapter, but it looks terrible because I the layout for my blog looks terrible. I can't figure out how to do the table of contents or anything. Whatever. I'll worry about it if people want more than just the prologue and first chapter.

Also the name is only temporary, until I come up with a better one.

    6. I only use Architectural nowadays; I find it easier to first write ideas, build a foundation, create a fantasy world and characters when I want to create a story. And only after I've gotten the building blocks of the story done can I begin writing with a goal in mind. This way I have a procedure I can follow and it makes it easier to consistently write.
Though I also started as a free-flowing writer and enjoy writing in that way, it isn't productive for me because I can lose interest if the story becomes muddled because my direction doesn't feel clear. But that's just because my mentality is that way, and for others it might work better to write in a free-flowing style. As long as you have a systematic/procedural way of doing things, it will be easier to continue doing it.

I'll read through the prologue and first chapter on your blog a bit later. Right now I have some things I need to do, but later today I'll read it.

If you want to do something like I've done with this blog I suggest you experiment with the layout section in the blog-configuration place. First make a page/post with a table of content, take that url and place it as an html-link ( http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_links.asp ) in the header with a link to the table of content, and then you have that at least. Much more isn't really needed, but that might just be because I'm not very good at configuring my blog either. As long as it works, it's fine.
I actually thought of coding a web-page completely by myself for this story at first, but realized that it would take more time than it was worth, at least for now. I might do that later, but only if I think it's really worth the hundreds of hours it could take.

    7. I actually could make the webpage probably. I just don't have the time or motivation to code anything other than what my assignments for school are haha.

    8. Same here, it's easier to do what takes less time with almost the same result, so why not do just that? One of the most precious things in life is time, and it's never worthwhile to squander it.
I enjoy programming, but am a bit rusty, so I'd have to refresh my understanding of PHP if I wanted to create a web-page with databases and create a log in system, comment section, et cetera... so it's easier to use blogspot. For now.

    1. Thank you, I'm glad to hear that my story is liked :)

And it's always nice to see new people. I'd be grateful if you helped me spread the word about this story. The more readers, the better; few things help me get motivated to write as much as seeing people enjoy what I've written. And when one of my view-count goals is reached I'll post more than one chapter that week.

    2. I wil most definitely do that! The one thing i really like about this story is you dont know if he is gonna keep going in the direction of magic (which seems he has an affinity for) at the same time he was a soldier and as the prologue has shown us he was proficient with a knife so he has the reflexes and experience to be a warrior. Im excited as to see what will happen in the future. So again thanks for this awesome work.

  23. Kinda interested, how many chapters do you plan to put in volume 1? It would be cool to get some cover art for it before it's fully released so it'll have some artwork for the kindle release.

  26. I started reading this a week or two ago, as recommended by a friend, and I have to say that it is very intriguing. I find the story very original and I am loving the development too! Keep it up! :D

  27. I love the plot twist! And it was neither unreasonable nor cliché. Kinda like Witcher, but more cheery(?), nicely done!

  31. Mhh, nothing new for a while, I wonder if he picks this up Later again.
Ive enjoyed the story so far and I can totally understand if the author is busy,
wants to take a break or is just bored and doesnt know if he wants to go on,
but a small message or so would be really nice.

If he chooses to integrate donation maybe a little cash would motivate him a bit or allow for more writing time.

  33. I reallt miss this web novel. I do. It had very new and interesting things to it. The greater background story was unneeded, I think, or at the very least, it was too early to delve into those things outside the game. All in all, I keep rereading this one because the concepts and premise are just that good
